Meet the Makers: Margaux from Jacobette

Jacobette Meet The Makers

Name: Margaux

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Cambodia: I am from a small village in France in the middle of the Champagne region. I have lived more than 5 years in Cambodia. I arrived first originally for an exchange program for my Masters degree.

Tell us about your favourite place in Phnom Penh: I am actually not sure I do have a favorite place right now in Phnom Penh. Since I moved house 3 months ago I am very happy to be in my home because we now have a garden.

When did you launch Jacobette: At the WIG Christmas market last year, so not even a year yet.

What’s the story or inspiration behind your brand: I took a block printing class in an art studio in Phnom Penh just after my girl was born and I loved it. I bought all the materials necessary to do it at home. A friend then asked me if he could buy my first tea towels and it was then the beginning of making more. I mostly get my ideas in my everyday life because I am mostly printing Cambodia themed things.

Where does the name Jacobette come from: A part of Jacobette is my married family name .

What’s the plan for the next year for Jacobette: Trying to find a maximum of shops reselling my products including Siem Reap and Battambang. And of course more new products and new stamps.

Name one thing you cannot find in Cambodia and that you miss: I can find a lot French food but when I go to France I spend mostly my money on food. All about food.

If you could have any product from the SATU collection (other than your own), what would it be: Ohhh I would love more than one! The shoes from Kingdom of Wow, a bag from Manava and the ceramic candle from Saarti.

What was the last gift you gave someone: A birthday gift to my husband last week, an electric screwdriver (he wanted it, not my choice ;) )

After answering these questions, you walk outside and find $1,000 on your doorstep. What would you spend it on: I will save it for a next trip outside Cambodia if the border re-opens soon, or keep it for a beautiful Christmas around the elephants in Cambodia ( a dream for me ).

About Jacobette

Jacobette is a collaboration between Nary from Phnom Penh and and Margaux from France who are producing hand-made and hand-printed homewares in Phnom Penh. Each product is uniquely decorated using hand-carved stamps. Margaux draws and makes the rubber stamps and does the block printing and Nary does the sewing. Each piece is unique and has been created with love.
